In their second WNCL match of the season, Victoria defeated NSW by 29 runs thanks to a terrific late batting cameo and outstanding individual bowling performance.
Georgia Prestwidge, the female all-rounder for Vic, reached an unbeaten 53 off 31 deliveries on Sunday at North Sydney Oval, helping her team reach 259 before spinner Sophie Day grabbed 4-32 to help bowl NSW out for 230.
Anika Learoyd’s 58 for NSW in the opening innings was the highest score of the match, while Prestwidge’s half-century at number nine was the best score for the Vics.
In a pivotal phase of the match, left-arm spinner Day dismissed Learoyd. In an outstanding display, she also claimed the first wicket, Claire Moore (10), and the third position, Elsa Hunter (1). With a 3-28, Vic’s nimble Milly Illingworth contributed significantly to the victory.
It is a disheartening few days for the Breakers to lose two consecutive games to the Vics after opening the season with back-to-back victories over Queensland, the grand finalists from the previous year.
Erin Burns did her best to raise the Breakers with 44 runs and three wickets while Georgia Adams was also handy with 3-32; nevertheless, loose bowling at the death and not making enough of starts with the bat hampered the Breakers.
