Soon after resigning from the post of BCCI’s secretary, Jay Shah assumed the office of Chairman ICC in the Dubai Headquarters of the International Cricket Council.
Shah was elected for the position of the ICC Chairman unopposed by the members of the board back in August 2024.
He was supposed to take charge of his office from December 1st as Barclay’s successor whose tenure had just been completed.
Entering the office, Shah has made his vision about expanding cricket very clear. ‘This is an exciting time for the sport as we build up to the Olympic Games 2028 and strive to make cricket more inclusive and popular than ever before.
We also stand at a critical juncture in terms of the coexistence of multiple formats and accelerating the growth of women’s cricket,’ he said in his very first statement as the Chairman of ICC.
While the elevation of Jay Shah from BCCI’s secretary to ICC’s Chairman is commendable for his career, it comes along with some high-stake challenges.
The first of these would be resolving the Champions Trophy 2025 dilemma. Though many presume his decision would be in the favour of BCC, it would be his call to show dedication and passion for the game.
The more balanced and amicable the decision he would take, the more reliable his leadership will be considered.
With years of experience in cricket administration, Shah certainly brings great leadership and a fresh dimension to the ICC’s operations and management.
‘I look forward to working closely with the ICC team and the Member countries to expand the game’s reach and evolution on the global stage,’ claims Shah in one of his very first statements as the new ICC Chair.
Therefore, his vision towards expanding cricket while keeping all the member countries included brings hope for the game.
