Matthew Short Argues For Himself to be Warner’s Replacement

Now, champion, all yours.” After retiring from the Twenty20 international format in June, David Warner shared a photo of himself and Jake Fraser-McGurk enjoying a drink on his Instagram Story.

Warner and most of Australia believed that Fraser-McGurk was the obvious choice to take his place at the top of the Australian T20I and perhaps ODI squad order.

However, Australia’s selectors aren’t entirely convinced just yet, and Matthew Short is determined to prove himself as Travis Head’s long-term partner after scoring 41 off 26 during a thrilling 86-run stand off 36 balls to deny England the opening Twenty20 international before the first powerplay in Southampton ends.

Short has been Australia’s most reliable all-format batsman at the domestic level for the past two years and the most dominant opener in the BBL for the past two tournaments, winning back-to-back tournament MVP awards. Fraser-McGurk’s meteoric star has shot from the fringes of domestic cricket into the stratosphere in less than a year thanks to a mind-blowing IPL.

After missing the Scotland series because of the birth of his first kid, Short wasn’t sure if he would get the opportunity to open. But after being moved around in his eight T20I innings, he is determined to take his turn at the top of the order.

Short stated, “I only found out last night,” after Australia defeated Pakistan by 28 runs. “It goes without saying that, with Davey Warner out, the position has become available. You never know where you sit, though, because Jake Fraser-McGurk has been playing the previous few games in Scotland. However, I’m happy that I kind of seized the chance tonight and did my part to help the team win.

It’s a sort of objective I have for myself. Over the past 12–18 months, I’ve been in and out of the side. I’m definitely attempting to seize this chance to solidify my place on this side now that Dave is gone.”

In Australia’s Twenty20 International, the opening slots are highly sought-after and fiercely contested. There are many talented players in Australia. The middle order and the death overs are where the selectors hope to add depth.

It was an area where Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade, who were domestic openers but were transformed into death hitters, helped them win the 2021 World Cup. They have identified Tim David as a world-class specialist, but despite having had a fiery start to his career, he has somewhat faltered and is still making a contribution in the most challenging batting duties.

Australia struggled in this area during the most recent T20 World Cup in the Caribbean, losing to both Afghanistan and India despite having the opportunity to win both matches. They also lost severely against England in Southampton, but it did not end up costing them the match. They were bowled out before utilizing all 20 overs, converting an 86 for 1 powerplay into a total of 179.

In order to give all of their T20I hitters more versatility, Australia’s selectors have attempted to offer Short some opportunity in the middle order during their five-match T20I trip of India last year, this year’s tour of New Zealand, and three of his four ODI appearances.

But it’s very obvious now that Short feels most at ease at the top of the hierarchy. When batting in the top three in T20s, he averages 29.96 and strikes at 150.09, whereas when batting at No. 4 or below, he bats at a strike rate of 14.09.

In his few T20I appearances, the strike rate differential is considerably more pronounced. He hits for just 126.66 in his two innings at No. 6 and 186 in his seven innings in the top three.

He obviously knows how to operate at the top of the lineup, and he blends in perfectly with Head in Australia’s strategy of pressing for maximum power play points.

“It’s a pretty clear game plan from the coaching staff,” Short remarked. Simply exercise your freedom and choose the right course of action. That’s the kind of approach Trav and I bring to the games.”

In Southampton, on the other hand, Short scored four runs off of the first seven balls he faced but failed to hit a boundary until he hit two consecutive sixes off Reece Topley in his sixth delivery.

Fraser-McGregor is under “no pressure” to achieve success at the international level right now, according to Captain Mitchell Marsh’s statement earlier this week. However, Short is exerting some of his own pressure to provide Australia with a wide range of opening choices.
